I had planned my Bali trip with one simple thought in mind: I’ll probably end up doing most of it alone.
I love traveling, but there’s something different about exploring a new place when you have someone to share the experience with. You can take the same beautiful photos alone, but having someone beside you when you discover a hidden café, watch the sunset, get completely lost on a scooter ride, or laugh about something that happened during the day makes the memory feel different.
So before my trip, I decided to try something new.
I created a travel post on Togera, a travel buddy app that lets people find others who are interested in traveling together.
Honestly, I didn't expect much.
Togera was still new, and I thought I probably wouldn't get any responses.
Then something completely unexpected happened.
A woman from Brazil joined my trip.
“Wait… Someone From Brazil Actually Joined?”
I remember checking my post again and again because I genuinely wasn't expecting anyone to join.
Then I saw it.
Someone from Brazil had joined my Bali travel plan.
My first reaction was basically:
“How did someone from Brazil even find my trip?”
We started chatting through Togera, initially just talking about the basics — where we were planning to go, what kind of places we wanted to visit, how long we would be in Bali, and what we expected from the trip.
But pretty quickly, the conversation became much more natural.
We talked about traveling, food, our countries, places we wanted to visit someday, and the funny differences between traveling in Indonesia and Brazil.
And that's what I liked about the experience.
I wasn't meeting someone because we happened to be staying at the same hotel or sitting next to each other on a flight.
We connected because we both wanted to explore Bali.
Exploring Bali With Someone I Had Never Met Before
We eventually decided to meet and explore together.
And that's when the trip started feeling completely different.
Instead of waking up and deciding what to do by myself, we had someone to ask:
“Where should we go today?”
One morning, we started with food and coffee before heading out to explore.
Of course, Bali being Bali, the plan didn't stay exactly as planned.
We stopped at places we hadn't originally planned to visit, took photos whenever something looked interesting, and spent way too much time talking instead of actually following the itinerary.
At one point, we were trying to figure out where to go next, and neither of us was particularly sure.
We just laughed and said:
“Let's see where we end up.”
And honestly, those unplanned moments became some of my favorite parts of the trip.
We talked about how different our lives were back home, what made us want to travel, and how strange it was that two people from completely different parts of the world could end up meeting in Bali.
She had come all the way from Brazil.
I was there with my own plans.
And somehow, a simple travel post on a new app connected us.
This Is Why I Think Travel Buddies Are Different
Solo travel is amazing.
You have complete freedom. You can wake up whenever you want, change your plans, spend three hours at a café, or suddenly decide to visit another part of the island.
But sometimes you don't actually want to travel alone.
You want someone to share the experience with.
That's where I think travel buddy apps can be interesting.
A travel buddy doesn't necessarily have to become your best friend. You don't need to travel together for weeks either.
Sometimes you just want someone to:
- Explore Bali with for a day
- Visit a beach together
- Find interesting cafés
- Go sightseeing
- Share a road trip
- Attend an event
- Explore a new city
- Take photos for each other
- Talk to someone while traveling
- Make a completely unexpected memory
And that was exactly what happened to me.
What Is Togera?

Travelers from all over the world come to Bali to explore places such as Ubud, Canggu, Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu, Nusa Dua and other parts of the island.
You can meet people in hostels, cafés, coworking spaces, tours and nightlife spots.
But there's another problem:
What if the people around you aren't traveling in the same direction or on the same dates?
That's where creating a travel post can make things easier.
Rather than waiting until you randomly meet someone, you can put your travel plans out there and let people who are interested find you.
That's essentially what happened with my trip.
I created a post thinking nobody would respond.
Then a woman from Brazil joined.
The Best Part Wasn't Bali
Here's the funny thing.
Bali itself was beautiful.
The beaches were beautiful.
The food was amazing.
The sunsets were incredible.
But after the trip, I realized something.
The best part wasn't necessarily where we went. It was who I met along the way.
I probably wouldn't have met her otherwise.
We came from different countries, had completely different backgrounds, and happened to be traveling around the same place at roughly the same time.
Togera simply gave us a way to discover each other's travel plans.
And that's what makes travel so interesting.
Sometimes you start a journey looking for a destination.
And you end up finding a person instead.
Would I Use a Travel Buddy App Again?
Definitely.
Especially when traveling somewhere where I don't know many people.
I'm not saying every travel buddy you meet will turn into a lifelong friendship. That's not realistic.
But you don't need that.
Sometimes you just need someone who wants to explore the same place, eat the same food, watch the same sunset, or take the same spontaneous trip.
And if you're traveling solo in Bali, Indonesia, or anywhere else, there are probably other travelers wondering the exact same thing:
“Is there anyone else who wants to explore this place with me?”
That's the idea behind Togera.
